Kenja's Newsletter & Updates

Volume 3/ Edition 1

January 22, 2001

Hello everyone

Welcome to Kenja's Newsletter. I hope everyone had a great Holiday Season and a even greater start into the Year 2001. *smile*

Thanks for all the letters in support of me making some 'major' health changes. I must say, even though I am going on 3 months of being smoke free and breathing is much easier these days, there are still a lot of kinks that need to be worked out. And with the start of a new year, I know I am not the only one in the quest for a healthier life. *smile*

There are many different type of aids to help you kick the habit (not just smoking... ), some are more costly than others, and not everything will work for everyone. For weeks, I've been hearing about a book... people said that, after reading it they just quit smoking and didn't experience any of the common 'side effects' like insomnia, depression, moodiness, etc. Needless to say, I was very curious to find out more about this 'wonder book' called Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking.

After coming up empty handed searching the US book stores online, I then searched the European Amamzon.com stores. To my surprise, it was listed in both the German and the UK stores. The book costs £ 5.95 (British Pounds Sterling) and £ 8.- for shipping (usually within 5-7 working days from UK to USA). You can use the Universal Currency Converter™ for free online currency converting services.

Many of you are probably not even aware that, once you have established an account with any of the Amazon.com stores, you also have instant access to any of the other International stores, to include USA, Germany, UK, France, Spain, & Japan with the same log-in and password. This makes shopping World wide a breeze, widens the variety of products (most overseas items are not offered in the US store), and your credit card will take care of the exchange and bill you in your currency.

*NOTE* Please keep in mind to calculate foreign currency charges to your credit card somewhat generously because not only does the daily conversion rate vary from day to day just like the stock market, but also credit card companies will convert currency charges on the day of processing and this may not be on the day you ordered (these dates may vary greatly).

Health and Herbal:

You will notice that your body needs a little extra help trying to recoup from years of 'abuse'. Your doctor may prescribe drugs or, you can turn toward the more natural approach by using Herbal remedies. Either way you should always keep your options open and research for possible usage and/or side effects. I found a few very helpful websites to help you make the right choices:

  • If you need information about side effects, ingredients and/or other usage for your prescribed drugs, search for them at these websites (descriptions are very detailed): Mayo Clinic.com and RX List

  • Good general health sites that include information gender specific, reference guides, articles for various current health topics, etc.: Health World Online and Prevention

  • To purchase and/or learn more about Herbal and Natural remedies check out the following two sites: AllHerb.com and onHealth Herbal Index

  • Great resources for Herbal References that also include usage, dosage, name variations (latin names), and/or side effects, etc., are the Herb Web and Herbal Encyclopedia

Yet again on the subject of smoking or rather kicking the habit... four more websites that offer some good information and/or help for you and/or anyone you know who would also like to kick the habit or could just use some support. *smile*

  • Free Help to Quit Smoking Cigarettes is designed for people from California, though anyone else may find some helpful hints here as well.

  • Nicotine Anonymous lets you download various free information on the topic, offers a newsletter and shows you how to start your own meetings.

  • Q4L (Quit 4 Life) is an interactive website geared toward teenagers by following the story of peers with different life styles.

  • QuitNet is a great site that offers among other things a guide to proven methods, peer to peer support group, free membership, National Directory and a Pharmaceutical Product overview.

Games:

I guess after all that 'healthy' talk you could stand some fun in your life. *smile* Well here are some wonderful free games and game sites that are full of fun and hours of entertainment for the young and the old(er):

  • FreeGames.org is a site I wrote about before, but it is always being updated and worth mentioning. You will find over 700 full-sized Freeware Games (not Shareware or Demos) to download. Games range from Classics like Pac Man (Arcade) with a small download of around 1 MB to the more elaborate like 3-D Action games that are around 60 MB to download. When you visit, make sure that you have plenty of time, space on your hard drive and/or a storage device (i.e. CD or Zip)... trust me you will need it. *smile*

  • Pacventure 1.2 is a free Pac Man game with 3-D graphics and seven levels. The download is 5.27 MB and the game also includes password protection for each level played (not sure why anyone would need that... but ok... *smile*)

  • Golf fans will love the following two websites... at Carpet Golf VR you can download a free Virtual Reality golf game that includes a realistic looking 18 hole course with a built-in Playfield Editor to create your own custom fields and holes (instructions are at the website for both). For the real hard core Golfer you should try Prize Golf where they give away real money (vary in size but can reach into the 1.000's) and other prizes. The download for this free game is a mere 1.3 MB and participation to any of the Internet Tournaments is free as well.

  • Cheatbook Database is one of the largest cheats and hint lists available on the Internet. You can download these databases starting from the year 1998. Game cheats include the latest Arcade, RPG (Role Playing Game) and/or Action games on the market. There are two versions for the year 2000... hard core gamers might want to get them all. *smile*

  • Here are some goodies for Solitaire gamer fans: Pokemon Solitaire is a Freeware game for all Pokemon fans (mostly kids I would imagine) and the download is only 722 KB, and game works on Windows 95/98//2000/ME. For the real hard core Solitaire gamers, I would suggest getting the Hardwood Solitaire II: The Enchanted Decks (Shareware). I realize this is not a free game, however well worth paying for... the graphics alone are awesome and you can get a large variety of free card decks or make your own with a free ad-in program called the Deck Press. There are also many users with websites that offer a large variety of free card decks (something I am considering myself *smile*). Hardwood Hearts and Hardwood Spades are also available. Games operate on both Windows & Mac systems.
